Introducing AMBER Alerts on Facebook

Today, we are announcing a partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to send AMBER Alerts to the Facebook community to help find missing children.

The new initiative will deliver AMBER Alerts to people’s News Feeds in targeted search areas after a child has been abducted and the National Center has issued an alert.

These alerts, which include photographs and other details about the missing child, are shown on mobile and desktop. People can share the alert with friends and link directly to the National Center’s missing child poster, which always has the most up-to-date information about the case.

For years, people have used Facebook to post news articles about missing children and AMBER Alerts. In several cases, someone saw a post or photo in their News Feed, took action, and a child was safely returned.

In 2014, an 11-year-old girl was safely recovered after a motel owner recognized her from an AMBER Alert that a friend had shared on Facebook. The woman called the police, and the child was found unharmed. It’s amazing word-of-mouth efforts like this that inspired us to develop a more systematic way to help find missing children on Facebook.

We know the chances of finding a missing child increase when more people are on the lookout, especially in the critical first hours. Our goal is to help get these alerts out quickly to the people who are in the best position to help.

Here’s how it works:

When local or state police determine that a case qualifies for an AMBER Alert, the alert is issued by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and distributed through the Facebook system with any available information, including a photograph of the missing child, a license plate number, the name and description of the child and suspected abductor.

Law enforcement determines the range of the target area for each alert. The number of alerts people will see depends on how many alerts are issued in their area — some people may see a few each year and many people will likely get no alerts at all. The alerts will appear in News Feed, but will not trigger any notifications to a person’s phone.

With more than 725 children recovered as a direct result of AMBER Alerts since the program launched in 1996, we know the system works. We hope our new delivery mechanism will help increase that number and reunite even more families.

8 skincare myths debunked

Washing your face will cure acne: You may have heard this way too many times, but washing your face constantly throughout the day does not aid in reducing acne. In fact, it strips your skin of essential oil and makes your skin extremely dry and parched and susceptible to acne. Restrict to washing your face only twice or thrice in a day.

Scrubbing often reduces excess oil on the face: It is believed that if you have oily skin, scrubbing your face twice or thrice in a week will reduce the excess sebum. But this is not true. In fact, scrubbing your face more often might end up bruising your skin and in turn cause blemishes or pimples.

Pimples reduce with age: Most women believe that acne mostly happens to women in their teens and early 20s. However, acne has nothing to do with age. Not everyone outgrows it with age. Instead it reduces when you alter your lifestyle and have the right kind of food that cleanses and detoxifies your system from within.

8 skincare myths debunkedDo not wear an SPF on a cloudy day: Just because it is raining heavily, does not mean that you don't require a sunscreen. Going without it even at this time of the year is a complete no-no. Even on a cloudy day, the UV rays of the sun are at its prime and if you go without a sunscreen, you will surely get tanned.

Age spots are signs of getting older: Age spots or sun spots as popularly known, can occur at any age. The freckle-like spots on the skin are not really age spots, but happen when your skin has been exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun. The sun-induced discolouration can be only treated by skin treatments that are done by dermatologists.

Makeup can lead to skin breakouts: It is a popular belief among women that applying too much make-up can cause acne and pigmentation. Though applying a product that does not suit the skin does lead to breakouts, but that's not too often. However, you must choose a product that suits your skin type. Also, look for products that have 'non-comedegnic' or 'non-acnegenic' written on it.

If you have dry skin, drink more water: It is said that if you have dry skin, drinking more water will bring moisture to your skin. However, drinking water has nothing to do with dry skin. Surely, it does help your face glow and clears toxins from your system but it does not necessarily bring moisture to your skin. When you have more water, it cleanses your system from within, thereby making your skin less prone to any skin-related problems.

Expensive products are better: It is believed that only expensive brands and products go a long way in keeping your skin healthy and free from any skin-related problems. But the fact is that they almost do the same job that probably a less expensive product would do.

It is actually your lifestyle choice and the kind of food on an everyday basis that keeps your system healthy from within.

6 Habits that give you a paunch

We tend to overlook on certain habits that affect our life. We list down seven such habits that give you a belly pudge and how you can get rid of the unwanted fat gathering around your increasing waistline...

6 Habits that give you a paunch
Skipping meals
When you skip meals, you end up overeating later and the fat inevitably finds a way to your midsection. Make it a point to eat small to medium-sized meals every three to four hours daily. Says nutritionist Jivesh Shetty, "We have to trick our body into having smaller meals every two to three hours to keep our metabolic rate high, not making us feel hungry and binge later."

Binge drinking
When you binge-drink, you are inviting flab to settle down on your mid-section. Alcohol contains lots of calories and you often tend to feel hungry while you are drinking. If you want to go out drinking with friends, make sure you opt for red wine — it helps fight paunch. Nutritionist Namita Nanal, says, "The consumption of alcohol in moderation is fine during weight maintenance. You can choose to have wine as it is a rich source of antioxidants."

Crazy about crunches
Sit-ups tone the muscles and does not affect the layer of fat covering them. Doing 50 or 100 crunches will not make your jeans fitting loose. Instead of doing 50 crunches a day, it is advisable to jog or brisk walk in the park or on the treadmill for half an hour daily to get rid of the belly pudge. Nanal says, "Only doing too much of crunches will not help. A proper combination of a good workout along with diet will help you to lose the fat faster."

Consuming 'lite' products
Remember that opting for sugar-free sweets, yoghurt, low-fat snacks or diet sodas will not help in the long run. These artificial sweeteners trigger your metabolism to increase the storage of fat.

Staying away from bread
Whole-grain breads and cereals allow insulin to rise and gradually reduce the chances of adding fat to your belly. Make it a point of include wild rice, whole wheat chappatis and oatmeal in your meal plan once a day. Says Shetty, "Bread made from whole wheat and other processed grains have usually more fibre and are usually no different from homemade chapattis. It is healthy to have some amount of carbohydrates to help in the digestion process."

Fatty foods: a big no-no
Not all kinds of fats are unhealthy. Monounsaturated fats are good for you. Nutritionists opine that if you consume one-quarter of an avocado either in your sandwich or salad, you will lose the fat around your belly soon. Nanal adds, "Good fats are essential for your body. For example, you can have nuts, healthy oils like sunflower and olive oil. Avoiding them completely will not benefit your body completely."
